Some chargers along the Hume Highway have reportedly been down for months, meaning EV drivers are forced to plan ahead or take long detours. One driver says it made his 'range anxiety' worse than usual this year.
Some electric vehicle owners have reported struggling to find charging infrastructure on road trips this summer. The NRMA says it's working to speed up construction on new chargers and replace older ones to meet growing demand.Electric vehicle owners are being urged to avoid "petrol bowser thinking" when hitting the road this summer to avoid being caught out with a flat battery.
He experienced firsthand how during peak periods drivers can face long queues for chargers, large distances between stations or arrive to discover the chargers simply aren't working."I'd planned on that — so you get to Bega: plenty of chargers there but I had to wait there because somebody was charging at Bega.
Mr Tickell says his range anxiety was worse than usual this summer due to issues with the EV charging infrastructure along the way.Mr Tickell said even the more direct route along the Hume Highway would put his vehicle's range to the test, especially given the state of some of the charging infrastructure along the way.
That anxiety around charging infrastructure had led to Mr Tickell reconsidering his route on occasion, and adding hours to his journey to ensure there would be chargers on the way.AEVA ACT branch member Peter Campbell said that while the vast majority of EV drivers reached their holiday destinations without a hitch, he agreed it was disappointing not all chargers were working as they should be.
NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury acknowledged providers have struggled to meet demand during peak travel periods. He explained the NRMA was working to build a new charger in a new location every week, but it was also working to replace first generation chargers as faster ones became more readily available on the market.
