South Africa's Culture Minister says it is 'unfathomable' the key to Nelson Mandela's former cell could be sold, arguing it belongs to the people of South Africa and should be in a museum.
A South African cabinet minister has called for the cancellation of an upcoming auction of a key to the prison cell where Nelson Mandela was jailed for his opposition to apartheid.Guernsey's auction house said proceeds of the sale would go towards a memorial garden and museum around Mr Mandela's burial site
The key to the Robben Island prison cell is among memorabilia owned by or related to the country's first black president being sold by Guernsey's auction house in New York on January 28, 2022.
