South East Queensland has been celebrating Brisbane’s securing of the 2032 Olympic Games, particularly on the Gold Coast which is set to host 14 sports across seven venues including golf and volleyball.
The forecast $5 billion to hold the Games in Brisbane is quite modest considering the London Olympics cost $14.2 billion, the Rio Games around $17 billion, and the Tokyo Games have blown out to around $20 billion.
Around $84 million will be set aside for the opening and closing ceremonies alone but the cost is not expected to be too high since Queensland already has around 80 per cent of the required venues. All levels of government are united in the decision, including the opposition, who have said the Olympics will give everybody hope on the way out of the pandemic.
