Victoria’s wage theft agency filed the charges, saying the amount of underpayment “never tells the full story”.

Cleaning services giant Spotless is facing a criminal prosecution for allegedly failing to pay $17,000 in long service leave under strict state laws.

The government is also proposing to fine employers three times the amount of underpayment if the underpayment exceeds the maximum fine.Robert Hortle, commissioner of Wage Inspectorate Victoria, suggested the low value of the Spotless underpayment did not indicate the seriousness of the offence.“It’s hard to put a value on the leave workers were initially denied. Time that could have been spent with family, travelling or just relaxing.

The inspectorate has also brought cases over alleged breaches of long service leave against Optus, Commsec and Bankwest. In 2021, Coles pleaded guilty to seven charges of failing to pay $700,000 in long service leave to 4000 former employees and was fined $50,000.
