Joe Swash and Stacey Solomon have six children between them and are talking about becoming foster parents one day. However, Joe doesn’t mind admitting his parenting style is “chaotic” and “fun” and that he leaves it up to Stacey to set any rules.
And it’s up to Stacey to keep everyone in line. “Stacey doesn’t like it but she has to be the bad one,” says Joe. “Someone’s got to do it. She’s forever telling me, ‘I’m always the bad one!’ But there’s always got to be a bad one and I can’t do it!” Fostering is close to Joe’s heart because his mother, Kiffy, is a foster parent. Her work brought two cherished foster siblings into his life and changed his family for the better. Joe is so passionate about his mum’s vocation that he has filmed a sensitive but hard-hitting documentary delving into Britain’s dismal care system, called Joe Swash: Teens In Care.
Next came a seven-year-old boy called Daniel, who has been with Joe’s mum for the past 12 years and is now at university – an impossible dream for a lot of children who grow up in foster care. The work Kiffy has done is invaluable, but Joe reveals it was heartbreaking for his family when they had to give up the child they’d come to think of as their baby sister.
“He’s as much a part of the family as I am,” he says firmly. “I know what a positive family upbringing can give someone, and the impact it can have.”
