This revelation points to the existence of trade routes alongside the coast of the United Kingdom, one of the study’s co-author’s Professor Chris Kirkland argued. “Transporting such massive cargo overland from Scotland to southern England would have been extremely challenging, indicating a likely marine shipping route along the coast of Britain.
Lead author on the study, Curtin university PhD student Anthony Clarke, said this revelation raised questions about the people who erected Stonehenge and the transportation technology they had access to. While the Altar Stone originated in Scotland, the bluestones all come from Preseli Hills in south-west Wales.
