The Sydney Symphony Orchestra is promising that its first full season back at the Opera House Concert Hall will feature some of the biggest names in classical music and opera, including acclaimed violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, cellist Steven Isserlis and baritone Wolfgang Koch.

SSO chief conductor Simone Young says the new Concert Hall is like a box of chocolates. “You keep digging into it and finding interesting things, and there’s always going to be a surprise a little further down than you thought,” she says. Those surprises include — for the first time in 20 years — Wagner’swill be staged as an opera in concert by the SSO in Sydney.Das Rheingold as a stand-alone opera next year and schedule the three remaining performances over successive seasons. Young says the chance to play with the orchestra in the crystal-clear acoustics of the Concert Hall had proved an irresistible lure to some of the world’s virtuosos. “We use anything we can use to get artists in a great deal of demand to come to Australia,” she says. “It’s not like popping over from Vienna to London, or from Paris to Berlin. It’s a big commitment of time.” Young says morale has never been better after the orchestra went public last month with the findings of a that found “unacceptable rates of harmful behaviour” exists within the organisation, with bullying, sexual harassment and sexism the “lived experiences” of some musicians and staff.“What is the uncomfortable truth is that report is an example of workplace scenarios across the country,” Young says. “I think the positive thing is that the orchestra is in a tremendous place with morale right now.“It’s working at the top of its game, where certainly my five weeks in July and August are among the happiest I’ve had in my career.” In her second year as chief conductor, Young comes with two objectives. Firstly, she does not want to repeat herself.
