Backlash to Rod Churchill’s criticism of Latrell Mitchell has prompted the NRL to end the tradition of a Churchill family member presenting the grand final man-of-the-match award.

It’s unlikely Clyde and Billy Slater, who have both won the award twice, will be asked to present the medal on two separate occasions. It means Edwards, the most recent recipient, would be due to present the medal in 2057.

The decision to sever formal ties with the Churchill family on grand final day has been rubber-stamped by the ARL Commission directors., sent by Rod Churchill to South Sydney chairman Nick Pappas, recently became public. “Where was the human headline Mitchell tonight Nicholas?” Churchill texted Pappas following Souths’ 36-16 loss to Parramatta during Indigenous Round.

Panthers fullback Dylan Edwards was presented with the Clive Churchill medal by Rod Churchill last year.“Missing again, this was his big game apparently? Your club will not win another comp for another 40 years if this imposter remains at Souths. “He is a complete myth who has the aboriginal [sic] cause paramount and south sydney [sic] second, if at all. I hope you and family are well. Nothing was done and now this cancer that is Mitchell has ruined the club.”publication of the message prompted the NRL to investigate its origins and determine whether or not Rod was still worthy of presenting such a prestigious award given his comments against one of the NRL’s biggest stars.
