Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt is concerned the defence force could be stretched too thin by the cleanup burden of future natural disasters.

The Albanese government is worried the Australian Defence Force could be stretched too thin because it is repeatedly being sent to help with natural disasters, distracting troops from their core job of defending the nation.

Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt is concerned the ADF could be stretched too thin from repeat natural disaster cleanup.“But we do have concerns about how far they are being stretched. And their core job is the defence of the nation, and we do need to make sure that we’re not stretching them so far that that can’t remain their core focus.”, Labor figures including Mr Watt lashed the then Morrison government for the time it took to send the army into flood-ravaged communities.

Mr Watt, who is also responsible for the agriculture portfolio, announced the first national biosecurity plan to replace what he labelled an “ad hoc” approach to prevent pests and disease entering Australia. He said biosecurity challenges included emerging threats from livestock diseases such as foot and mouth disease and lumpy skin disease, as well as the varroa mite and Xylella .

“Our farmers are on the front line of climate change, experiencing the harsh cycle of extreme drought and extreme rainfall.”, the minister announced an additional $10 million to help Indonesia strengthen its biosecurity measures.
