'If we lose this dispute, it affects workers rights in general'
The branch secretary of Aslef, Britain's train drivers union, has warned "if we lose, you lose" as members staged a picket in Northampton today. He warned that it was more important than ever for the public to support the trade union movement.
He said the large turnout at Northampton and Bletchley's picket lines "demonstrates our intention to see this through, to get a fair settlement." He said drivers "bitterly regret" the impact their walkouts are having on people travelling to work and important appointments, but also expressed a caveat.
"All the things that have been gained by trade unions over centuries will start to be eroded by this Conservative government." He said the current industrial climate meant it was "important you support the trade unions; it's more important you join a trade union." Northants Live spoke to a worker employed in a business at Northampton station negatively impacted by the strikes. They said: "I've lost 13 hours of pay this week because of the strikes. Our business had to close because no trains are running."
"If we lose this dispute, it affects workers rights in general. And that's what people are realising now, more than ever."
