An agonising wait for people who have applied for travel exemptions to return to Victoria is taking an emotional toll on those who are separated from loved ones, or are unable to return to the state for work or study purposes.The Victorian government allegedly tells a woman on maternity leave that she is no longer a residentWhen James Ross left Melbourne at the height of the pandemic he thought he would return to study as soon as the new semester started.
"If I don't complete these units now I won't be able to retake them until the end of next year, and that's pretty upsetting," he said.Ms Smith returned to the Hunter to be with her family during her maternity leave and now can't get back into Victoria. "The operator said, 'Well, you've been out of the state for a long time. You're not really a returning resident'," Ms Smith said."I have a job in Melbourne, I have a house down there. What more do I need to do to prove I am a resident?" she said.For now, her employer is letting her work from home, which she says has been a lifeline.Both Mr Ross and Ms Smith complained about the travel exemption process.
"There's no way to follow up or check on the status of your exemption and it's really hard to find out who you even speak to," Mr Ross said.
