Sunderland Council sent the request to Susanne Wilson eight months after she was buried.
Fiona Hendry said she had been left looking at a "piece of dirt" where her parents are buriedA family say they were "disgusted" when a council wrote to their deceased mother asking her to clear unauthorised items from her own grave.
said some items could be a potential "trip hazard" and wanted to return burial sites to a "safe environment".Image caption,Mrs Wilson was buried in January, alongside father Billy who died while watching a football match at the Stadium of Light in 2004.Mrs Hendry said the family could not afford a council-approved headstone, which she was told could cost about £2,000.
She said: "We've been told anything that comes beyond the main stone, the headstone, or in front of it is an obstacle. Wheel trims, fallen branches on top of graves and large cracks in pavements have also become features at the cemetery, say families.Families were originally told to clear items last year, but a new deadline has been set for 30 September
