‘They’re beatable’: Waratahs not scared of Kiwi teams as they target 26-year hoodoo | iainpayten
won 51-27 in the Super roundBut the Tahs believe the formlines for the quarter-final remain muddied, given they went down to 13 men for a while and lost both hookers. And assistant coach Chris Whitaker said the defeat to the Chiefs at AAMI Park ended up being a lightbulb moment for NSW.“That first game against the Chiefs, I don’t I think anyone knew what to expect, especially after the season we had last year,” Whitaker said.
“There was a little bit of anxiety and nervousness in that first game against the Chiefs. But after we played that one the boys realised ‘you know, we’re half a chance here, we had some bad luck in that game fought that fight with one hand tied behind our back’.“Each game, I think we’ve just grown more confident. You put the Crusaders game in there, you win against Kiwi teams and then you go over there and win against the Kiwi teams, just gradually that confidence and that belief is building.
NSW five-eighth Tane Edmed indicated the team’s trans-Tasman results this year had helped them remind themselves that Kiwi players are mere mortals, too. “I think it kind of humanises the Kiwis a little bit,” Edmed said. “We know that we can beat them over there, and we’ve come so close against the Canes and the Blues as well. We know that they’re definitely beatable. So we’re definitely going over there with a lot more confidence. After knocking back other Australian suitors - particularly the Force - to extend his contract with the Waratahs on Monday, Edmed said his decision was due to the Tahs “trending upwards”.
“I didn’t really want to leave at all,” Edmed said. “We’re building something pretty special here and being in my home state my friends and family and then growing up playing here. Yeah, it was a very easy decision.”on the Home of Rugby, Stan Sport. Quarter Finals this week with Crusaders v Reds , Chiefs v Waratahs , Blues v Highlanders and Brumbies v Hurricanes .
