Supermarkets are once again an appealing target for politicians wanting to demonstrate their good intentions on helping consumers with cost-of-living pressures.
Already a subscriber? The huffing and puffing over Coles and Woolworths is a regularly recurring political phenomenon. This time around, the level of community pain over the cost of living makes attacks on the two big supermarket chains particularly appealing diversions.
And while Coles had 28 per cent market share and Woolworths 37 per cent last year, she argues there’s still plenty of competition available for Australian consumers.into what has been a voluntary code of conduct governing the supermarkets’ relationship with their food and grocery suppliers sounds relatively restrained – although hardly costless.
This all ensures the imminent announcement of the supermarkets’ third-quarter results will focus on political pressure as much as sales figures.into supermarket prices, more government funding for supermarket price monitoring by Choice, and a broader government review of competition policy, with changes to the mergers regime to be announced on Wednesday.
It’s not exactly a commitment to act, more a way to maintain a version of the fragile Coalition unity that Dutton is so keen to protect. Neither the government nor the Liberals will want to be seen to be outflanked on being tough on Coles and Woolworths right now, not to mention the ACTU’s constant criticism of “price gouging” by corporates. The business community has become increasingly concerned that Jim Chalmers’ recent rhetoric about the need for higher economic growth and productivity is not matched by government policy – but rather the reverse, most obvious in its industrial relations changes.
