Heavy rains in Far North Queensland have contributed to a concerning rise in melioidosis cases, a deadly soil-borne bacterial infection. The region has experienced a sharp increase in infections, with two fatalities reported since the start of the wet season. Health authorities are urging residents to be aware of the symptoms and take preventive measures to mitigate the risks.
Heavy rains in Far North Queensland are being blamed for a significant rise in melioidosis cases. The region has seen a surge in infections of this deadly soil-borne bacterial disease, resulting in the deaths of two individuals since the onset of the wet season. The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service has documented 36 cases of melioidosis since November.
This number represents a substantial increase compared to the previous year, when the region recorded only 14 cases during the same period. 'It's a very big number of cases for the Cairns and Hinterland region, and we've only just started seeing the effects from the rain,' said Tropical Public Health Services director Jacqui Murdoch. Melioidosis is known to thrive in soil and becomes more prevalent after rainfall, with infections more common during the wetter months. Dr. Murdoch highlighted that authorities are uncertain about the precise cause of the almost threefold increase in cases, noting that most infections have been linked to Cairns's southern corridor. To mitigate the risks, Queensland residents are urged to remain vigilant for signs of infection, including flu-like symptoms. 'You might not know. That's why it's really important to go and see a GP or go to the emergency department early if you get a fever, cough or difficulty breathing,' advised Dr. Murdoch. She further emphasized that most recent cases have been contracted through airborne particles of the disease, particularly affecting individuals with pre-existing lung conditions. Dr. Murdoch also underscored the importance of preventive measures, such as avoiding outdoor work during rainfall, wearing a mask while utilizing high-pressure hoses near soil, and covering any skin abrasions. The Torres and Cape Health Service has reported one case of melioidosis this year, compared to three during the same period last year. Dr. Murdoch emphasized that those with chronic conditions should prioritize managing their health effectively by regularly visiting their healthcare teams.
