Surge in non-COVID-19 deaths as pandemic ‘reaper’ takes its toll

New analysis from the Actuaries Institute reveals a large spike in non-COVID-19 deaths compared with historical averages, as it catches up with elderly people.

The coronavirus pandemic is fuelling a wave of non-COVID-19 fatalities, according to new analysis from the Actuaries Institute.

“With so much more prevalence of COVID in the community there’ll be people who have underlying conditions who are just less able to shield and stay away from COVID,” Ms Cutter said. Of this number, 3600 or 53 per cent were from COVID-19, but 3200 or 47 per cent of the excess deaths were from other causes.

Professor Kelly described the deaths as “the reaping” delayed, a reference to the medieval grim reaper figure associated with plagues. The actuary study noted that a large number of deaths were still to be registered in June, but on a preliminary basis said it was reasonable to assume that in May to July 2022, around 76 per cent of COVID-19 deaths may have been from coronavirus.
