It may be noisy, it may be densely populated, but thanks to a vibrant cafe culture and a colourful history, Surry Hills has taken out a new digital accolade as Australia’s most Instagrammed neighbourhood.The inner city suburb came 11th in a list of 50 famous neighbourhoods across the world, attracting 599,156 hashtags on Instagram.
It eclipsed the only other Australian locality on the list, the inner west Melbourne suburb of Yarraville, by more than 332,000 hashtags, and ranked before trendy neighbourhoods in Tokyo, London and San Francisco.To come up with the ranking,used Forbes, Complex and Timeout to determine the most famous neighbourhoods in the world.
They then entered each suburb name into Instagram and noted the number of tags before ranking in the order of most to fewest. The name of the place was used with other relevant tags. In the case of Surry Hills, the following hashtags were used: #surryhills,#surryhillslife,#surryhillssydney.The diverse suburb has become more gentrified in recent years with the media house price spiking 20.8 per cent over the last 12 months alone.Yarraville came 19th on the list with 267,002 tags.
