Sydneysiders experienced the coldest day of the year on the first day of winter, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Sydneysiders experienced the coldest day of the year on the first day of winter and ski resorts had their best day of snowfall, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The mercury hit 8 degrees in Sydney on Wednesday morning, but BOM forecaster Jonathan How said that given the strong winds, commuters or anyone brave enough to be out jogging would have felt like the temperature was close to zero.“Those icy winds really make a difference, even though it is kind of sunny in Sydney,” he said.

“It’s been quite a significant cold snap across south-eastern Australia. We had that cold front and low-pressure system move through on Monday, but behind it we’ve seen very cold air pushing up as well in the south of the country and that has lasted until Tuesday and into this morning.Melbourne experienced the coldest day of the year on Tuesday, with a maximum temperature of 11.4 degrees and only slightly less on Wednesday, Mr How said.

Sydney was also on track for the lowest maximum temperature of the year on Wednesday, at 14.8, and a “feels like” temperature of 3 degrees at lunchtime.Tuesday also brought with it the best snowfall for the year – ranging from 20 to 50 centimetres at Thredbo in NSW as well as Mt Hotham and Mt Buller in Victoria, along with snow flurries in other parts of the state such as Ballarat, Trentham and Mount Macedon.

Mr How said people in Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane could expect a winter that was cooler and wetter than average.
