A suspected gunman was extradited to New South Wales after a police chase and shootout in Sydney's west. The suspect, Paea Tuiniua, is facing multiple charges, including firing a weapon at police.
A Glock pistol, a grenade and a semi-automatic rifle were allegedly found in a stolen car after police were shot at during a pursuit through Sydney ’s west, with the suspected gunman extradited from Queensland after a week on the run.
Paea Tuiniua, 20, faced Downing Centre Court on Tuesday charged with 13 offences, including discharging a pistol to resist or prevent arrest, firing a weapon in a manner likely to injure the safety of a police officer, and possessing a grenade, AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, Glock-19 and a Beretta M9 handgun. He did not apply for bail and it was formally refused. Paea Tuiniua was extradited from Queensland on 13 charges, including possessing a grenade, pistol and semi-assault rifle. Tuiniua was arrested at Brisbane Airport on Friday wearing luxury brand Burberry board shorts and T-shirt and extradited to NSW on Monday, having allegedly fled the state following the New Year’s Eve pursuit.Police allege Tuiniua and Finau, armed with pistols, attempted to break into a home on Calaria Close in Edensor Park around 1.30am on December 31. The residents, a man and a woman, were not home at the time. Police believe the pair have links to organised crime groups and the incident was a gangland hit attempt.CCTV showed a man wearing a mask, black hoodie, track pants and black gloves attempting to kick down the door. Police say the two men then left in a Hyundai sedan. When officers located the vehicle on Cowpasture Road in Hinchinbrook and the pair refused to pull over, a pursuit began but was soon abandoned due to the driver’s erratic behaviour.Another chase was initiated shortly after the car was spotted on St James Road in Varroville.
