As a jury was being selected in Real County on Tuesday for what was expected to be a 10-day trial, District Attorney Christina Mitchell Busbee and defense lawyer Leigh Cutter hammered out a plea deal. John VanMeter, a 24-year-old boxer, was killed on Jan. 23, 2019, during a home invasion in Uvalde. Police arrested a 12-year-old boy and charged him with capital murder. A Texas Ranger was supposed to be a witness at the juvenile’s trial, set to start this week, but was suspended over the police response to Robb Elementary mass shooting. The case was instead “pleaded down” with the defendant agreeing to serve a six-year sentence.
Under increasing public and political pressure to take responsibility for his own agency’s response, McCraw announced last week that five DPS officers had been referred to the state’s inspector general. Two of them were suspended.Body cam footage released last week shows police had information early, and throughout the incident.This week, McCraw said two more officers had been referred to the inspector general over the response.
