A regional Victorian emergency department has hired additional security guards as sicker patients and longer wait times lead to a rise in aggressive behaviour.

"Our staff have been affected by this … and we are all scared of somebody getting hurt under our responsibility," Mr Abraham said.He announced additional safety measures had been implemented, including reinforcing protective screens and doubling the number of security guards, and called on patients presenting to the emergency department to treat staff respectfully."We need to make sure they are protected.

It came after an increase in verbal and physical abuse at the height of the COVID pandemic prompted the health service toMildura Base Public Hospital chief executive Terry Welch said he had noticed aggressive patient behaviour becoming pronounced just prior to the pandemic and The Victorian government has invested more than $47 million on occupational violence training and initiatives since 2015.
