Sydney bus strike hits inner west, Parramatta, Liverpool the hardest | Rabe9 Mattonews
Commuters in Sydney’s inner west and Liverpool, Fairfield and Parramatta have been the hardest hit by a reduction in bus services on Monday after up to 70 per cent of drivers in those areas took part in a 24-hour strike.
However, in Sydney’s inner west, including Strathfield and Sydney Olympic Park, only 35 per cent of drivers were on duty, and in Liverpool, Fairfield and Parramatta it was just 30 per cent, the government said. “We can never rule out further industrial action. We may have to do this again – that will be up to our membership to decide,” he said.
Bus drivers are seeking “same job, same pay protections” across the patchwork of privatised bus networks in Sydney, arguing some receive substantially lower pay and conditions than others working in the same depot, driving the same routes.Credit:Double-decker bus driver Jacque Wilson, who attended the rally on Monday, said conditions in the industry had worsened during her nine years in the job.
Another bus driver, who asked not to be named, said he and his colleagues had risked their health throughout the pandemic to provide public transport to Sydneysiders, and it was time for some recognition in the form of improved pay and standardised conditions.Kate Geraghty “Apart from a few traffic incidents, the general traffic volumes have not been heavy,” a Transport Management Centre spokesman said.
