Sydney must reinvent itself as a region of six cities – including Newcastle, the Central Coast and the Illawarra – to compete with global population hubs, says the head of the renamed Greater Cities Commission | michaelkoziol

Sydney must reinvent itself as a region of six cities including Newcastle, the Central Coast and the Illawarra to maximise its productivity and compete with global population hubs, says the head of the renamed Greater Cities Commission.

Cities Minister Rob Stokes said it was a bid to make Sydney and surrounds more innovative and resilient in the same vein as the San Francisco Bay Area, the Netherlands’ Randstad and China’s Pearl River Delta. He said the commission would follow the principle that people should be able to commute within their neighbourhood within 15 minutes, their city within 30 minutes and their region within 90.

“This government has spent billions on building railway lines over the last 10 years. We need to make sure that housing diversity and affordable housing is built at scale in accessible places across the six cities,” he said.
