A family of seven in Sydney escaped a house fire by smashing a second-story window and climbing down a ladder. The father managed to alert his family and get them out safely.
A family of seven narrowly escaped a devastating house fire in Sydney this morning after a quick-thinking grandfather smashed a second-story window and climbed down a ladder to safety. The blaze erupted in the garage of a home on Penshurst Street in Penshurst, south of Sydney , around 4:30 am, alerting the father of three to the danger.
He immediately rushed upstairs to wake his family, consisting of three children, two parents, and the children's grandparents, before attempting to extinguish the flames with a garden hose. Tragically, the grandfather became trapped by thick smoke while trying to rouse the sleeping children. Faced with imminent danger, he made the desperate decision to smash a second-floor window, creating an escape route. Meanwhile, the children's father, who had been battling the fire downstairs, used a ladder to reach the awning of the home and successfully pulled the grandfather and three children through the broken window to safety.Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the house engulfed in flames, with the blaze threatening to spread to an adjacent property. Thankfully, a working smoke alarm alerted the father to the fire in the early stages, giving them precious time to escape. Fire and Rescue NSW stated that the smoke alarm undoubtedly saved the lives of the family. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but authorities have discovered several lithium-ion batteries charging in the garage, which may have played a role in the ignition.
