A family of seven, including three children, narrowly escaped a devastating house fire in Sydney 's south early Tuesday morning. The fire erupted in the garage of a two-story home on Penshurst St in Penshurst around 4:30 am, rapidly spreading throughout the residence. The family, comprising two adults, three children, and two grandparents, were asleep upstairs when the blaze ignited.
Alarmed by the sound of the smoke detector, the father sprang into action, quickly awakening his family before attempting to subdue the flames with a garden hose. However, he soon realized the intensity of the fire had surpassed his control. The grandfather, meanwhile, tried to rouse the sleeping children but became trapped with them upstairs due to the thick, suffocating smoke. In a desperate bid for safety, he smashed a second-floor window, allowing the father, who was downstairs, to climb onto an awning using a ladder. The father then successfully evacuated both the grandfather and the children.Approximately 30 firefighters and eight fire trucks rushed to the scene, encountering a fully engulfed inferno posing a significant threat to a neighboring house. Firefighters ultimately managed to extinguish the blaze, but the house was reduced to a charred shell, leaving only the basic frame standing. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire and Rescue NSW investigators have noted that several lithium-ion batteries were charging in the garage at the time of the fire, and this will be a focal point of their inquiry. FRNSW emphasized the importance of working smoke alarms in potentially life-saving situations, stating that, “Thanks to the early warning provided, seven lives were saved this morning.
