While 160,000 passengers used the light rail over the weekend, only 15,000 had used it to 2pm on Monday. Mr Constance said the modest figures were partly due to the Christmas period.

Transport for NSW co-ordinator general Marg Prendergast said there had been a number of instances of people putting themselves at risk, including two men who kept walking onto the tracks on George Street on Sunday to take photos with their phones. "Sydney Light Rail is not going to be a monorail ... I think they should get off its back a bit. It's just getting a little bit ridiculous."

Among the thousands of commuters riding on the light rail early on Monday was Andrew Irving, who said he was looking for "a more relaxed ride" rather than the fastest possible commute, and gave himself an extra 10 minutes on Monday morning to try out the tram."I hate buses – they're noisy and jolty and crowded," he said. "I've allocated an extra 10 minutes ... so far it's really pleasant.
