A key rural road in Sydney's rapidly growing southwest region will receive a significant upgrade to connect with the new Western Sydney International Airport. The $1 billion investment in Fifteenth Avenue, a two-lane road currently experiencing high traffic volume, aims to address congestion and safety concerns as the area's population is projected to increase substantially in the coming years. The project, announced jointly by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns, is a key commitment to infrastructure development in western Sydney and is expected to boost economic growth and opportunity in the region.

A rural road in one of Sydney's busiest areas is set to receive a $1 billion upgrade to connect it with the new Western Sydney International Airport. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns will announce on Sunday that Fifteenth Avenue, a two-lane road running through a rapidly growing corridor of south-west Sydney, will become a critical transport corridor between Liverpool and the new airport, which is scheduled to open at the end of next year.

The upgrade will be a key link between the south-west Sydney hub of Liverpool and the new airport. The announcement comes ahead of a looming federal election and follows a campaign by Liverpool Council which urged the state government to redirect $300 million allocated for seat upgrades at Penrith Stadium towards the new road. More than 22,000 vehicles currently use Fifteenth Avenue daily, with congestion expected to worsen as the population in the surrounding areas is projected to increase by 63,000 by 2041. The council emphasized the need for an upgrade due to long traffic delays and safety concerns for both pedestrians and drivers as more people move to nearby suburbs like Austral and Middleton Grange. Their campaign to upgrade the road described Fifteenth Avenue as “a two-lane rural road” that no longer meets current traffic demands. The council stated, “With a population of approximately 250,000 people and a projected population growth of 100,000 over the next 20 years, this road requires urgent action to meet our community’s transport needs.” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his desire for western Sydney to become a gateway to the rest of the world, stating, “We want it to thrive as the engine room for jobs, economic growth and opportunity.” He added, “This half a billion dollars’ worth of new funding from the Australian government is part of our commitment to delivering more resilient infrastructure for all Australians.” NSW Premier Chris Minns echoed the sentiment, stating, “This critical investment is a game changer for western Sydney that will connect thousands of jobs at Western Sydney Airport and the Aerotropolis with Liverpool.” Transport infrastructure surrounding the new airport, or lack thereof, has been a major point of contention for western Sydney communities, including a push to extend the city's metro line to the outer suburbs within 15 years to fully leverage the potential of the Aerotropolis. NSW Roads Minister John Graham highlighted the economic implications, asserting that the economic opportunities of Western Sydney Airport will be lost if Fifteenth Avenue remains a two-lane road. He emphasized, “With this substantial investment in the road infrastructure of western Sydney, we are building a highway to economic opportunity.
