Sydney Symphony Orchestra has launched a massive multi-year commissioning project that will add vast amounts of new works to the library of Australian music.
As part of the 50 Fanfares project, 50 Australian composers have been commissioned to write new works to be rolled out progressively between now and 2022.
Composers Liza Lim and Connor d'Netto with SSO violist Rosemary Curtin and principal double bass Kees Boersma. The SSO’s director of artistic planning, Raff Wilson, said the selection panel ended up with a “long list” of 280 composers, which was in itself a “revelation”.“It was an amazing process," he said. "We cast the very widest net that we could.
Composers Christopher Sainsbury and Georgia Scott with SSO chief Emma Dunch and director of artistic planning Raff Wilson. And while the project calls for “fanfares”, the works that will be commissioned will be very broad in style, length and instrumentation, ranging from short traditional fanfares and smaller chamber compositions to pieces for a full orchestra.
The first of the fanfares will be premiered in August. Written by Sydney Indigenous composer Christopher Sainsbury, it will be part of theproject, celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. Sainsbury has been asked to write a piece to be performed alongside Beethoven’s monumental Ninth Symphony. He said he was excited to have been asked to contribute and that 50 Fanfares would give much-needed exposure to a diverse range of contemporary composers.
