Cameron Bancroft expresses gratitude for the outpouring of support following his traumatic collision with teammate Daniel Sams during a BBL match.
Sydney Thunder opener Cameron Bancroft says the support he has received since his sickening collision with teammate Daniel Sams in Friday night’s BBL clash with Perth has been “overwhelming”. Sams and Bancroft were both sent to Royal Perth Hospital after running head-on into each other while tracking a high ball in the outfield last week. Sams was stretchered off the ground in a medicab and Bancroft’s BBL season is over after scans confirmed he suffered a fractured nose and right scapula.
A return to play date is yet to be determined for the West Australian batter, but it’s unlikely to be before the latter stages of the Sheffield Shield season. Speaking for the first time since the hit, Bancroft was quick to thank everyone who responded to the incident. “I just wanted to say a big thank you to the Thunder, Scorchers and CA for their help in making sure our wellbeing has been taken care of. To Royal Perth hospital as well for their care,” Bancroft said. “It hasn’t gone unnoticed. “To everyone out there who has reached out to make sure I’m OK. A big thank you. The support has been overwhelming.” Posting a photo of his injured face to show the physical aftermath for the first time, Bancroft even made a gag at his own expense. “Some say I am better looking now,” he quipped. “But I still think there’s a long way to go. Onwards and upwards!!” The positive message follows that of Sams, who had a similar sentiment on Monday. “Thanks for all the well wishes over the last couple of days. Has given me a lot of gratitude for the support I have around me,” he said. “A massive thank you to Thunder staff, Scorchers staff and Cricket Australia medical staff for looking after Cam and I. “I am on the mend and can’t wait to be back. “Go well tonight lads. So proud of this team.” Sams and Bancroft were both released from hospital on Saturday, but remain surrounded by family as they continue to recove
