A smaller version of Sydney's world-famous New Year's Eve fireworks will still go ahead after the City of Sydney council struck an agreement handing responsibility for the multimillion-dollar event to the state government.
In a statement on Thursday evening, Cr Moore said: "Only the state government can manage the increased health, transport and crowd management challenges during the pandemic."[Mr Ayres] has assured me that the government will take full responsibility for the preparation and funding for the fireworks and crowd management, safety, traffic and transport, and is prepared to cancel the event if there is a spike in COVID-19 cases.
"I do feel it's important for the state and the nation because it's really a national symbol that's beamed around the world," Ms Berejiklian said. She said the event could be a "symbol of hope" and a signal 2021 was a new year.
