The Sydney to Hobart yacht race has commenced amidst dramatic conditions, with the forecast of strong winds and high seas posing a significant challenge to all participants, particularly smaller yachts. The race evokes memories of the tragic 1998 event, prompting hopes for a safer and smoother competition. The race also features the oldest boat in Sydney to Hobart history, Maritimo Katwinchar, making its third attempt at the challenging course.

The annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race has begun dramatically, with several close calls on Sydney Harbour. While the start was great, the forecast of gale-force winds and four-metre seas tonight presents a challenge for all competitors, especially smaller yachts. There are hopes that the race will not experience a repeat of the 1998 disaster. The final weather briefing this morning didn't seem particularly worried. It's likely the larger boats will face the worst conditions.

The wind change is expected later on the NSW coast, and hopefully, the smaller yachts will avoid the strongest winds and waves as they sail south. The concern is especially regarding Bass Strait, where winds of 35 knots and high seas could be dangerous. As a reminder, the 1998 Sydney to Hobart was devastated by severe storms and winds exceeding 65 knots. Six sailors died, five yachts sank, and 55 sailors were rescued in a massive emergency operation. Maritimo Katwinchar, built in 1904, is the oldest boat in Sydney to Hobart history and is competing in its third race in 2024. The race field is filled with stories, both from the crews and the boats themselves. The interest surrounding Maritimo Katwinchar stems from its history. It is the oldest boat not only in this year's race but also in Sydney to Hobart history. Built in London 41 years before the Sydney to Hobart began, it was originally a ketch (two-masted boat). It raced in 1951 but was retired and thought lost, only to be rediscovered and restored by Barry-Cotter. Maritimo Katwinchar competed in 2019, placing 62nd overall. Now, it's back with modifications, including the removal of its second mast and replacement of the main mast with a new carbon fiber one. Currently, it's sailing at 9.3 knots and is 13.4 nautical miles behind the leader. Updates on its progress will be provided throughout the day
