Sydney Trains has lost its bid to stop industrial action taken by members of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union.

Sydney train commuters have been urged to plan ahead with more industrial action delays and cancellations expected to hit the city's rail network on Monday.

"On any normal day we have staff absent from duties … standby arrangements in place and we have staff at depots to cover those shifts," he says. "Put the industrial action to the side, take commuters out of the firing line, and let's have those discussions that round out the package. "I am not satisfied on the evidence that I can infer from any increase in sick leave numbers that the union has organised or is organising a covert campaign of sick leave amongst its members," deputy president Thomas Roberts said.

"If the commission while making this ruling said that this appeared to be some easing of industrial action, if it's not the case tomorrow, we will not hesitate to file again to make this claim," he said. "It will be dependent on how many staff report for duty. We'll be doing everything we can through the rail operations centre to manage those delays live.
