Syrian rebels have breached the second-largest city of Aleppo, marking a significant shift since their previous expulsion in 2016. Following a shock offensive that started on Wednesday, insurgents have captured numerous towns and villages, setting off car bombs, and advancing towards the city centre. Russia and pro-Assad forces are under pressure to restore order.
Syria n opposition fighters entered the village of Anjara, on the western outskirts of Aleppo , on Thursday. Syria n rebels have launched a surprise assault on Aleppo , the site of the 2016 battle which largely turned the country's civil war in the government's favour.
It is the first time the city has been attacked by opposition forces since 2016, when they were ousted from Aleppo's eastern neighbourhoods by government forces backed by Russia, Iran and its allied groups — a turning point in the country's civil war. Fighters also advanced on the town of Saraqab, in Syria's north-western Idlib province, a strategic area that would secure supply lines to Aleppo.
The fighting is the most intense in north-western Syria since 2020, when government forces seized areas previously controlled by opposition fighters. "Hezbollah was the main force in the government's control of the city ," said Rami Abdulrahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
