With another storm predicted to bring heavy rain to much of Tahoe, officials warn residents to prepare for potential structural collapses.
One square foot of snow can weigh anywhere between 6 and 40 pounds, says Dr. Andrew Schwartz, lead scientist at the Central Sierra Snow Lab."Immediately after snowfall, one cubic foot of snow weighs around 6 to 8 pounds," he says."Compacted snow that has been sitting on a roof for several days will weigh 19 to 25 pounds. If it has started to melt or has rain in it — pertinent this weekend — it would be 31 to 40 pounds per square foot.
Social media pages around the lake have been flooded with photos and videos of homes with 5-foot-thick snow cornices threatening power lines, residents shoveling roofs, internal damage to homes, and even residents kayaking and sledding off their roofs. Despite the novelty of the heavy snowfall, South Lake Tahoe warned residents to take the threat seriously, advising them to seek immediate assistance in clearing any roof with more than 3 feet of snow.
