The Crew have won just one of their last seven MLS games and the team's frustrations are starting to mount. Here's what we learned from Sunday's loss.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Hany Mukhtar delivered the killer blow to the Crew in the 97th minute on Sunday night at Geodis Park, but the damage to the Crew's hopes ofIn just the second minute of the game, the Crew took an early lead on a strike from distance by midfielder Yaw Yeboah, but. In the 56th minute, forward Fafa Picault scored the first of two goals from corner kicks, and forward Teal Bunbury put Nashville ahead on a nearly-identical play in the 80th minute.
But after scoring in the second minute, the Crew struggled to generate much in the attack. This year, that has often led them to rush offensive sequences, a pattern that repeated again on Sunday — much to Nancy's displeasure. The rushed chances also hurt the Crew's ability to create more offense. By settling for shots from outside the 18-yard box or hurrying to make passes rather than waiting for a better look, the Crew both easily handed the ball back to Nashville and cut short their own attacking opportunities.
Heading into Sunday's game, the Crew had conceded just two goals from set pieces among the 23 goals they'd allowed in 13 games — one for Inter Miami from a corner kick and one for Orlando City after a free kick. But against Nashville, two of the three goals the Crew conceded came directly from corner kicks. The Crew's desperate defending as they fought to stop Nashville in transition led to the corner kicks, and they then weren't able to exert their will in the key moments.
The second goal was almost identical to the first, just from the other side of the field. Forward Teal Bunbury found space between Quinton and defender Steven Moreira, and Quinton mistimed his jump and attempt to clear the ball, which meant the ball was in the gap for Bunbury to head it past Schulte.
The Crew have won just one of their last seven MLS games after winning three straight from March 25 to April 8.
