Glenn Evans has told a Hobart court of the crash that killed fellow Targa Tasmania competitor Shane Navin in 2021. An inquest is examining four deaths in three separate Targa crashes in 2021 and 2022.
A coronial inquest is examining the deaths of Targa Tasmania competitors Shane Navin , Leigh Mundy , Dennis Neagle and Anthony Seymour who died in three separate crashes during the 2021 and 2022 Targa rallies. The inquest is expected to take five days. Coroner Simon Cooper will then consider the evidence and hand down his findings and recommendations at a later date.
He said that before the Mount Arrowsmith stage, which is between Queenstown and Derwent Bridge, they were warned that conditions were "very slippery" after the first 33 kilometres. Mr Malcolm drives the Targa stages to assess hazards, and whether conditions should be deemed wet or slippery. He was asked if, when he was checking the stage, he considered the creek and the fact that there were no barriers."Yes there is a little bump as you enter that area, I didn't have any cause for concern.""I don't particularly remember hitting the bump but I remember feeling the front of the car lose grip," he said.
After another failed attempt to try and get Mr Navin out of the car to perform CPR, he managed to attract the attention of race officials who were driving through the stage.Risk of death 'high': lawyer
