Almost $10 billion of tariffs between Australia and Britain have been abolished in a trade deal signed between the two countries that features a watered-down pledge to abide by their commitments to tackle climate change.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison in September said the government had opposed including the Paris agreement’s specific temperature goals because the deal was meant to be “about trade”. The Australian public sector will also be given the ability to attract contract bids from Britain, while British service suppliers will have access to visas to work in Australia without being subject to Australia’s skilled occupation list. The deal provides new access for Australian agricultural exports into Britain and lifts customs duties on Australian wine entering the British market.
