Tasmania records a new daily high of 1,489 COVID cases as the state now permits rapid antigen tests as a diagnostic tool to ease pressure on PCR testing clinics.

Tasmania has recorded 1,489 new cases of COVID-19 — almost double yesterday's tally of 751.

Eight people are in hospital with COVID-19, with three patients being treated specifically for COVID symptoms. No-one is being treated in intensive care.Rapid antigen tests are now permitted to be used as a diagnostic tool for COVID-19 in Tasmania, after the change was announced by the state government yesterday.

The move follows a decision by National Cabinet earlier in the week, and comes after PCR testing clinics faced overwhelming queues across Tasmania — especially in the state's south.
