Tasmania has built a brand off it's clean, green identity. But a new state of the environment report — the first in 15 years — paints a different picture.

The government is supposed to provide an updated State of the Environment report every five years, but hasn't done one since 2009 — until today.

"In the face of escalating environmental challenges, it is important action is taken to ensure that public and private efforts to conserve, protect and restore nature are maintained and strengthened."The report assessed 29 environmental categories across six broad themes — coasts and marine, land, biodiversity, rivers and wetlands, air, and waste.

"It is the Commission's view that investment in the management of Tasmania's environment and the implementation of these recommendations must be considered on a scale that is equal to the scale of the current and emerging environmental challenges," it stated. The Australia Institute, which has been campaigning for the release of the long-delayed report, said the findings were damning.

"We know that if we continue on in this direction, we are sending future generations of Tasmanians, future industries, the growth and prosperity of us all, into a very bleak place from the trajectory that the report card shows," Dr Woodruff said. Planning Minister Felix Ellis said the government was reviewing the findings and recommendations of the report.
