Some Tasmanian prisoners are resorting to pulling their own teeth due to a 'woefully inadequate' dental service and a chronic staff shortage has led to excessive full-day lockdowns, a report into inmates' health has found.
A report into the health and wellbeing of adult prisoners in Tasmania has found excessive lockdowns at Risdon Prison, triggered by staff shortages, are significantly impacting the physical and mental health of inmates.
It also detailed a snapshot of full-day lockdowns from January 2023, revealing some units at Hobart's Risdon Prison spent more than half the month in lockdown, reducing inmates' access to healthcare. "Because at any time medical complications might ensue as the razor blade passed through her gastrointestinal system and urgent intervention would be required which could not be delivered in the Inpatient Unit," wrote Dr Petch.
Custodial Inspector Richard Connock also described the incident as "inappropriate" and without "sufficient justification". He did note however that the relationship between the prison and health staff appeared to have since improved. Deputy Premier Michael Ferguson says the government are continuing to recruit staff and do its best to respond to the independent report.
