A 'long and overdue safety reform' that allows both corporations and individuals to be charged for negligence or breach of duty when it causes a death at work has passed both houses of Tasmania's parliament.
The amendment to the state's work health and safety laws imposes a maximum punishment of 21 years' imprisonment, or fines of up to $18 million for a body corporate in workplace death convictions.abc.net.au/news/tasmanian-parliament-passes-industrial-manslaughter-laws/104331438Tasmania has become the last Australian jurisdiction to pass industrial manslaughter laws, as an Opposition push to introduce them passes both houses of the state's parliament.

"The laws will result in a system that is more just to the victims, easier to understand for the community and fairer to businesses that do the right thing and meet their responsibilities and obligations under the work health and safety act," she said. "We've been making representations to this government about this issue ever since they have been elected, and we have pushed harder and harder," she said.
