Dairy producer links up with Tasmanian start-up to produce the world’s first low-emissions milk.
Already a subscriber?A Tasmanian start-up has joined forces with a premium dairy producer to engineer the world’s first low-emissions milk by feeding digestive seaweed in micro-doses to cows.
“This offers a simple way for people to help reduce carbon emissions, and it’s a lot cheaper than buying a Tesla,” Mr Bennett told“We are proud to lead the way with this Tasmanian solution to a global challenge.”, when added in small amounts to feed rations. The fashion designer turned seaweed farmer said methane had a global-warming effect 28 times that of carbon dioxide, causing livestock to contribute about 15 per cent of global greenhouse emissions. But feeding asparagopsis to animals could reduce their emissions by up to 90 per cent.
Mr Elsom said that while Tasmania was the ideal location to produce asparagopsis, given it was abundant all year round, SeaForest would explore the development of another variety of the seaweed in Townsville.
