Tasmanians requiring specialist procedures for strokes and aneurysms will be sent to Melbourne for treatment, due to the state being without its two interventional neuroradiologists.

A Tasmanian Health Service spokesperson said the staffing shortfall was due to a combination of "illness, isolation and leave requirements". The THS spokesperson said "alternative treatment options" were in place for emergency cases, while highly qualified interstate specialists were available to assist on a consultation basis.

But Shadow Health Minister Anita Dow said the shortfall was "incredibly concerning" and said it would be "extremely traumatic" for patients transferred interstate to receive treatment.
