McDonald’s Australia and its franchisees were the biggest beneficiaries of the Coalition’s $5.8 billion trainee and apprenticeship wage subsidy, documents show.

Unions have slammed McDonald’s and its Australian franchisees being paid up to $72 million to subsidise trainee pay under a Morrison government-era program designed to “shore up” the nation’s skills pipeline.

All up, 226 McDonald’s franchisees used the program, according to documents obtained by The Australian Financial Review under freedom of information.Stores could claim up to $28,000 a year per employee in training under the Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements program announced by former prime minister Scott Morrison to bolster the post-pandemic recovery.

The often bitter rivalry between retail workers union the SDA and the Retail and Fast Food Workers Union was put aside on Sunday when they were told about the $72 million figure. In a statement, McDonald’s said it was proud to have supported 4297 staff to complete their training while being supported by the BAC program.
