A desk for overflow instruction sits in the hallway at Negley Elementary School in Kyle, Texas, on April 14, 2022.It’s the Thursday before Easter break at Laura B. Negley Elementary School in Kyle, and the school is buzzing with kids excited for a three-day weekend.
There’s not enough space in the classrooms, so tables, desks and chairs are arranged outside in the hallway for small groups to be able to work or study. There’s a shortage of office space, as the school has to hire more staff to accommodate more students, so a few storage utility closets have been turned into teacher offices.
“We’ve been a fast-growth district now for about 15 years,” said Tim Savoy, communications director for Hays CISD, “but it seems like in the next 10, we’re going to be a really fast-growth district.”Several major corporations — including Tesla, Samsung and Shop LC — have announced new plants, offices or other business endeavors in the Austin metro area in the past year.
Then there’s the Anthem subdivision in Kyle, which is expected to have about 2,000 homes and be built in Negley Elementary’s district.
