Teachers’ union, transgender clinic rejected by Sydney Mardi Gras parade | michaelkoziol

The NSW teachers’ union and the state’s largest transgender service centre say they are disappointed and dismayed after being excluded from next year’s Sydney Mardi Gras parade, as organisers claim there was simply no room given high demand.

“We provide over 90 per cent of trans-specific services to the community in NSW,” the group’s health and communications manager Eloise Brook said. “We’re big – and it’s our birthday.” The group said it accepted just 70 per cent of applications; entries were assessed by an independent “curatorial committee” consisting of diverse members of the LGBTQ community. Priority went to groups with “strong creative ideas with the ability to produce and deliver them”, it said.Less than 14 per cent of the parade’s approved entrants were corporate partners, Mardi Gras said, “with the vast majority comprised of LGBTQIA+ community groups and organisations”.

There was also a “giant, and I mean giant” apple containing four confetti cannons, Heymel said. Inside the cannons there would have been messages of pride and support from regional areas.
