The family of Tamil asylum seekers held in immigration detention for four years have arrived back in the regional Queensland town of Biloela | stuartlayt

The family of Tamil asylum seekers held in immigration detention for four years has arrived back in the regional Queensland town of Biloela.

They flew into the town from Brisbane on Friday, after the change in the federal government paved the way for their return from immigration detention in Perth. The family’s return coincides with the Banana Shire’s Flourish Multicultural Festival on Saturday and Tharnicaa’s fifth birthday on Sunday. They were then held at the Christmas Island detention centre for two years until former immigration minister Alex Hawke moved them to community detention in Perth in mid-2021.That move was prompted after Tharnicaa had to be medically evacuated to the mainland with a suspected blood infection, following claims by supporters that the girls were not receiving appropriate medical care at the island detention centre.
