A dam holding BHP’s mine waste is quietly sucking carbon out of the atmosphere and could store enough to offset its entire iron ore and nickel carbon footprint.
About three years ago, a colleague told Samantha Langley in a casual chat about some 2005 research on a tailings dam in the middle of Western Australia. Turns out the sludge-filled dam had been quietly sucking carbon out of the atmosphere and locking it away in mineral crystals.
As a scientist responsible for measuring and reducing the amount of greenhouse gas that BHP’s nickel division pumps out,for Langley. After some more digging , Langley believes the dam has the potential to store more carbon each year than is emitted by the mining giant’s entire iron ore and nickel divisions.
Langley is the subject of episode three of our new podcast series, Tech Zero, which explores some of the innovative ideas that will help Australia get to net zero emissions, and make money doing it.
