Incoming NSW coach Laurie Daley has sparked controversy by excluding James Tedesco and Nicho Hynes from a crucial meet-and-greet with potential Blues players for the 2025 State of Origin series.
The futures of James Tedesco and Nicho Hynes in the State of Origin have been dealt another blow. Incoming NSW coach Laurie Daley has opted not to invite them to a meet-and-greet with potential Blues players for the 2025 series. Daley held a session with 28 players he considers most likely to be selected in May, with NRL heavyweights like Nathan Cleary, Mitchell Moses, and Tom Trbojevic spending several hours with him in a hotel conference room at Brighton-Le-Sands on Saturday.
However, in a significant indication that they won't be part of Daley's Blues team, Roosters star Tedesco, who Daley gave his Origin debut to in 2016, and Cronulla halfback Hynes were not included. Daley explained the purpose of the gathering to CODE, stating it was about outlining his expectations and values as a coach. He emphasized that nothing is finalized as it's still early in the selection process and many players could potentially be considered. He pointed out that last year, several players who weren't initially in the squad ended up playing in the series, citing Mitch Barnett, Connor Watson, and Angus Crichton as examples. Despite claiming the meet-up doesn't exclude players like Tedesco from making the team, Daley's decision to overlook both Tedesco and Hynes is telling. Tedesco lost his Blues jersey last year and was also dropped from the Kangaroos despite a career-high in try assists and tackle busts in 2024. Daley was part of the four-man selection panel that made the decision to remove Tedesco from the national team. Hynes, on the other hand, has been given two chances with the Blues, both failing to impress. After not making a significant impact in Game I last year, he was replaced by Mitchell Moses in Game II and Game III. This marked the second time he was dropped from Origin in 12 months, having been cut earlier after a brief stint off the bench. With players like Mitch Moses, Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai, and Tyran Wishart ahead of him in the pecking order, Daley seems set to overlook Hynes for the 2025 series
