Teen Dies After Falling onto N.Y.C. Subway Tracks as Train Was Approaching: ‘Freak Accident’

An 18-year-old woman, identified as Jessica Marleny Ajtzac Guarcas, died after falling onto train tracks in New York City, according to authorities

Jessica Marleny Ajtzac Guarcas, 18, was found “unconscious and unresponsive” on the tracks and pronounced dead at the scene, an NYPD spokesperson tells PEOPLE

The incident occurred at the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street station around 6:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the New York City Police Department tells PEOPLE. New York City Transit Authority President Richard Davey tells PEOPLE the young woman fell onto the tracks while seemingly experiencing a medical episode. He described the situation as “a freak accident.”Footage of the incident, captured by MTA cameras at the station, did not appear to show the woman bracing herself for impact before the fall, according to Davey.
